Telling the Time with Analog Clocks

  • Hour hand We call the hand of the clock that counts hours the “hour hand.” The numbers 1 to 12 on the clock face represent hours. It takes the hour hand 12 hours to make one full circle around the clock, so two full circles takes 24 hours, which is one day!
  • Minute hand We call the hand of the clock that counts minutes the “minute hand.” The small numbers 1 to 60 around the outside of the clock face represent minutes. It takes the minute hand 60 minutes to make one full circle around the clock, which is one hour!
  • Second hand We call the hand of the clock that counts seconds the “second hand.” As with minutes, the small numbers 1 to 60 around the outside of the clock face also represent seconds. It takes the second hand 60 seconds to make one full circle around the clock, which is one minute!
  • Hour hand When we want to know what hour it is, we look at the short, pink hand that Professor Seiko is telling us about! Right now it’s pointing at the number 10, so it’s ten o’clock!
  • Minute hand When we want to know what minute it is, we look at the long, yellow hand that Degita is telling us about! Right now it’s pointing at the number 8, so it’s eight minutes past!
  • Second hand When we want to know how many seconds, we look at the long, thin, blue hand that Little Miss wheel is telling us about! Right now it’s pointing at the number 42, so that’s forty-two seconds!
  • The time shown on the clock in the picture is…10:08:42
