In the northern hemisphere(north of the equator), the summer solstice is the longest day of the year, with the most hours of daylight. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, with the fewest hours of daylight. I’m sure you can see, too, that in places near the North Pole around the time of the summer solstice there are times when almost the whole day is light, and that around the time of the winter solstice there are times when almost the whole day is dark like night!
