Grand Seiko Museum
Welcome to the World of Grand Seiko
Grand Seiko was born from the ambition and passion to create the world’s finest watches.
From the introduction of the first Grand Seiko in 1960, through efforts to perfect the accuracy, legibility, and beauty of form that constitute the essence of watches, and incorporating a uniquely Japanese aesthetic and spirituality rooted in the bountiful nature and changing seasons of Japan, this aspiration has evolved into the current brand philosophy, “The Nature of Time.”
The world of “The Nature of Time” is something we have been able to create as an almost unparalleled Manufacture d'horlogerie, performing everything from the development of movements to watch design, parts production, assembly, adjustment, and inspection. Please take your time to fully enjoy the many historical products on display.
Creating a world-class Japanese watch
of the
highest quality
In 1960, the first Grand Seiko was born from the firm conviction to create a world-class,
high-accuracy, high-quality watch.
This is the beginning of our history of bringing together the best in watch technology that we have
cultivated over the years.
It is our high-level pursuit of the essential qualities of wristwatches: accuracy, legibility, and
beauty.
The history of striving to create
the highest
quality watches
In 1964, four years after the release of the first Grand Seiko, the Grand Seiko Self-Dater was created,
with greatly improved practical performance. This became the model that clearly defined the direction
of Grand Seiko from that point on.
The challenge of creating the highest quality watches continued, and in 1966, the Grand Seiko
Standard, which was even more stringent than the chronometer standard set by the Bureaux Officiels de
Contrôle de la Marche des Montres, was established, and in 1967, a design philosophy called the Grand
Seiko Style was devised. Under this standard and this philosophy, Grand Seiko continues to evolve and
develop as a unique brand.
The World of Grand Seiko
that has Expanded in
Various Ways
Grand Seiko’s history includes many historically relevant products that serve as proof of the brand’s
endeavors in aiming to be the pinnacle of watches.
Each Grand Seiko model is imbued with the passion of engineers who combine their wisdom and skills in
research and development, and the spirit of challenge in manufacturing.
In particular, from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, as high-accuracy movements were developed one
after another, combined with advances in processing technology, there was great expansion not only of
base models, but also many iterations of Grand Seiko presenting a variety of designs and expressions
of beauty. Each one embodied a high degree of perfection, individuality, and distinct characteristics,
and expanded the world of Grand Seiko.
The Beginning of
the Grand Seiko Lineage
with
Three Distinctive Mechanisms
After Seiko released the world’s first quartz watch in 1969, the standard for wristwatches changed
significantly, and the shift from mechanical timepieces to quartz timepieces progressed rapidly. While
pursuing the ultimate accuracy in mechanical watches, research and development also continued in
search of values suitable for a new era.
From the late 1980s onwards, a new lineage of Grand Seiko began, with three drive systems: quartz,
mechanical, and Spring Drive, which features characteristics of both quartz and mechanical drive
mechanisms.
The Evolution of Grand Seiko
from
the Past to the Present and
into the Future
At the two workshops that produce Grand Seiko watches, the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi and the
Shinshu Watch Studio, development continues to further evolve the three types of movement: the 9S
mechanical movement, the 9R Spring Drive movement, and the 9F quartz movement.
In addition, in terms of design, while carrying on the traditional design philosophy of Grand Seiko,
Grand Seiko has established the “Evolution 9 Style” suitable for the modern era.
We also invest effort in material development and after-sales service systems to ensure that our
watches continue to be used and enjoyed across generations.
Looking to the future, Grand Seiko will continue to evolve with the aim of providing watches that can
be cherished across generations.
