While the origins of the hourglass remain unknown, one can confirm its existence before 1300s by a fresco paint of that period. Hourglasses were used in European churches and ships during the Age of Exploration as timepieces resistant to swing. An episode from the life of Horatio Nelson is engraved on this hourglass.
