Edo Period
Hourly Ball-Dropping Table Clock
A table clock with a single-foliot balance driven by a spring. Balls placed within the cylinder in advance fall every hour on the hour due to the measured rotation of the dial. The falling balls strike three different bells with three different tones to inform people of the time through the openwork decoration of the wooden box.
