Watch for Telephone Exchange

A watch used by telephone operators to measure the duration of domestic long distance calls. A size 19 pocket watch is enclosed in a large size 24 case to display and measure the time more clearly.

Additional information Japan’s first domestic long distance calling service was launched in 1890. Until 1964, all domestic calls had to be placed through telephone operators. The operators calculated the call charges based on the measured durations of the calls. They used this special watch to take the measurements.
